    At its Monday, Feb. 23 meeting, the Historic District Commission (HDC) reviewed plans for alterations to the outside of the Poor People's Pub to enclose a walk-in cooler. A walk-in cooler is being installed on the porch of the building and will therefore need to be enclosed. Owner Ross Audino brought renderings to show the two different options under consideration.

    On Feb. 17 and 18, the Island Free Library and Island Bound Bookstore hosted a 76th year anniversary celebration of “The Grapes of Wrath” by John Steinbeck. Memories of reading the book 40 years ago just wouldn’t suffice. It would have to be read again. What struck me was how much of the book I didn’t remember.

  • Location of Harbormaster office becoming a concern

    The work being done on the breakwater at Old Harbor was a topic of discussion at this month's Harbor's Committee meeting on Thursday, Feb. 19. The discussion started with how big the rocks needed to be in order not to be pushed around by the waves, and moved onto whether the height would be a problem in 20 years, given the rising sea levels. That discussion preceded the committee's actionable items on their agenda.

    To the east of my house is a field a handful of us call The Orchard, a place where trees have not grown in my lifetime. They were, I speculate, apples, big enough that my dad and his three older brothers climbed among the branches. Tightrope walking between them may have been in the realm of mermaids and playing baseball on Georges Bank, stories a man told his little girl.

    The bill is less than two pages long but it has caused quite a stir.

    “Totally foolish,” is how state Rep. Blake Filippi (I, Dist. 36) described House Bill 5257 that was introduced in January. Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit also said flatly that her department does not support the bill.
