    Town officials held an emergency meeting on Monday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. at Town Hall as Block Islanders brace for a winter storm warning with possible whiteout conditions.

    Town Manager Nancy Dodge said the forecast was bad: “Fifteen to 24 inches, winds blowing 60 to 70 (miles an hour), for a long duration. So, we may well be in for it.”

  • Winter Storm Warning

    A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Block Island and most of the east coast with two to three feet of snow predicted. The forecast is calling for heavy snow with blizzard-like whiteout conditions at times. Town Manager Nancy Dodge said that town roads will be closed on Monday night, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m.

Leveille, who has travelled abroad many times for that purpose, will explain the work of Cross Cultural Solutions (CCS), an organization that brings together persons eager to volunteer with international communities where the need for assistance — even on a short-term basis — is great. Leveille’s program is set to begin at 2 p.m.

  • Belichick lets air out of "DeflateGate" controversy

    Now it's "on to Seattle."

    Finally, after almost a week of the "DeflateGate" controversy, Patriots coach Bill Belichick stepped to the podium at 3 p.m. Saturday at Gillette Staidum and attempted to put an end to it. Belichick held an impromptu press conference and revealed that the Patriots did an internal scientific investigation, found no wrongdoing and claims that the team "followed every rule to the letter."

    A few facts:

    • Experience Mitchell arrived in Plymouth Colony in 1623, the first Mitchell in America.

    • He married Jane Cooke, the daughter of a Mayflower passenger; all Mitchells are therefore Mayflower descendants.

  • Beach access conditions vary

    It was quite the adventure just to get to the start of the Tuesday, Jan. 20 meeting of the New Shoreham Beach Access Working Group. The long road from the bottom of Snake Hole Road into the Black Rock area had ruts and waves with troughs deep enough to bottom out even Highways Supervisor Mike Shea’s town truck.

  • "This is only a test!"

    While testing a new emergency notification system during their meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20, members of the Senior Advisory Committee (SAC) inadvertently sent the practice message — “This is only a test!” — to 480 households that were signed up for the service. Within minutes the police dispatcher received some 50 calls from individuals who had not heard the "only a test" part of the message, as Town Clerk Molly Fitzpatrick informed the group when she dropped in.

    A $700,000 bond to renovate the building that will house the new island doctor was handily approved at the special Financial Town Meeting held tonight at the Block Island School cafeteria.

    Town Moderator Molly O'Neill read out the ballot results — 128 yays and 40 nays — a little after 9 p.m. Only about a third of the total assemblage stayed for the results, but the meeting attracted a full, standing-room-only crowd. — Lars Trodson
