Block Island Pursuit Race

Sunday, Sept. 3
Thu, 08/31/2017 - 8:30pm

The following was sent in by the Block Island Yacht Club:

The Block Island Yacht Club will host the “BIYC Around the Island Pursuit Race” on Sunday, Sept. 3. According to race organizer Henry duPont, “This will be an around-the-Island sailing race with a twist!” Instead of the yachts all starting together and then having their corrected (handicap) time applied at the finish, each yacht will have its own assigned starting time, according to its handicap, so that all the yachts, if well sailed, will finish the race course at the same time. This is known as a “Pursuit Race,” which guarantees an exciting finish.

Any yacht with a Performance Handicap Rating (PHRF) may enter. In addition to the Block Island Thursday Night Sailing Fleet, we expect a good number of larger island boats, and transient racing yachts as well. The course will honor government buoys, and is about 16.9 nautical miles in length. The start/finish line will be just outside the Great Salt Pond channel.

There will be a spinnaker class and a non-spinnaker class for the participating yachts, with awards for the top three finishers, in each class, scored under the PHRF yacht handicap system.

Event Schedule:

10 a.m., Skippers Meeting at the Boat Basin Picnic Tables.

Noon, first start outside the entrance channel of the Great Salt Pond.

7 p.m., After Race Awards Party, hosted by the BIYC, Kimberly’s Restaurant, Ocean Avenue.

Registration is at: and up to 10 a.m. on race day. The preregistration entry fee is $25 per boat, $30 on race day.
