Common Ground Coffeehouse

Well-established as solo performers in their home state of Rhode Island, Tracie Potochnik and Steve Allain joined forces in 2014 to form Cardboard Ox. The duo is known for sweet and soulful harmonies, thoughtful musicianship, and delicately crafted lyrical storytelling. They will perform at Common Ground Coffeehouse on Friday, June 8, at 7 p.m. Complimentary supper served at 6:30 p.m. Come early to get a good seat (overflow crowd last Friday). Donations for the musicians are encouraged.

Island Free Library Events  

Fun activities after school every Friday at the Island Free Library at 1 p.m. A different activity every week: Legos, arts and crafts, board games, and STEM projects. (The last Fun Friday will be June 15.)

Farmers Market

The first Farmers Market will be this Saturday, June 9 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Legion Park. The market will be held on Wednesday, June 14 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at The Spring House. Farmers Markets will be on Wednesdays and Saturdays at their respective locations for the rest of the summer.

Not New Boutique 

Opening sale is Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Andrew Parish Center, Spring Street, Lower Level and Barn. Good clean used clothing, shoes, and hats at great prices! Accepting donations throughout the summer at the drop-off box at the Parish Center.

Restaurant Week 

Sunday, June 10 to Saturday June 16, about 20 of the island’s restaurants are offering special dishes at exceptional prices, including breakfast specials and twocourse prix-fixe lunches and three-course dinners designed to thrill your palate and your pocketbook. Prices range from $10 to $14 for lunch and $21 to $29 for dinner.

Taste Of The Island

The third annual Taste of the Island. Enjoy a taste of the 2018 menu items from the island’s finest dining establishments. Sunday, June 10 from 4 to 6 p.m., At the Block Island Maritime Center. Only $20 per person, proceeds benefit Helping Hands Food Pantry. The Bayberry Wreath award will be presented to Ray Torrey.

Walking Festival

The first Block Island Walking Festival is June 11 through June 13. Sign up before-hand at active.com. The cost is $40 and all proceeds go to the New Shoreham Recreation Department. Guided walks by friendly local experts will take place during the two days. A welcoming reception will be on Monday, June 11, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the B.I. Historical Society.

Music Festival

Tuesday, June 12 to Sunday, June 17, this 21-plus event takes place at Capt. Nick's Rock N' Roll Bar each evening beginning at 5 p.m. There is no cover charge. Billed as a "six-day musical gumbo where festival goers sample music performed by the most talented undiscovered artists currently making music in the northeast." Summer Camp

Registration is now open for summer camp at the Block Island Early Learning Center for ages 18 months through five years. Please call (401) 466-9695. 

Horseshoe Crab Survey And Tagging Programs

To learn about the ecology of horseshoe crabs and Project Limulus, a citizen science program based at Sacred Heart University, join one of these horseshoe crab survey and tagging workshops. No experience is necessary, just be prepared to get your feet wet. Meet at Andy’s Way. Workshops are: Tuesday, June 12 at 8 a.m.; Thursday, June 14 at 9 p.m.; Saturday, June 16 at 11 a.m. and at noon in two different locations: Andy’s Way and Cormorant Cove; Tuesday, June 26 at 8 p.m.; Thursday, June 28 at 9 a.m. at Andy’s Way and Cormorant Cove; Saturday, June 30 at 10 a.m.

Block Island Medical Center Summer Party

Scholarship Fund Deadline

The Frederick J. Benson Memorial Scholarship Fund Committee has applications ready for the 2018-2019 school year. Gardeners Spring Plant Swap

Please join the Block Island Gardeners for the annual Spring Plant Swap on Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to noon (rain or shine) at the Chasse home off Spring Street.  Bring a plant if you have one, or pick up some free seeds for your garden. Blues On The Block Golf Tournament

On Monday, June 11 there will be a Golf Tournament benefiting Blues on the Block. The golf tournament will be held at Meadowbrook golf course in Richmond, R.I., with a 10:15 a.m. shotgun start. Saturday, June 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be available for purchase (pulled pork, BBQ chicken, coleslaw and baked beans). 

American Legion Auxiliary Annual Yard Sale

Lions Club Fundraiser

The Lions Club will be hosting a benefit event for Robbie and Irina Murphy on Wednesday, June 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Yellow Kittens to help offset the cost of medical expenses. There will raffles, auctions, and entertainment. The public is invited.

The Senior Advisory Committee invites members of the island community (ages 35 and over) to participate in two surveys — one related to aging; the second for caregivers.
