Dave "Cook" Alpers, 64
Dave "Cook" Alpers, 64, died peacefully at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 after a valiant fight against cancer.
Dave was born on Dec. 2, 1952 in New Jersey, and grew up in South Windsor, Conn. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from South Windsor High School. His final Coast Guard posting was on Block Island and he made his home here when he was discharged; working at the National Hotel, Interstate Navigation and, finally, the Block Island Power Company until illness forced his retirement. His main regret was that he didn’t live long enough to see the wind turbines power Block Island — and the diesel engines turned off.
“Cook” was well known to many as a good friend, good cook, and an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Brad Alpers, and survived by a sister, Sandy Alpers Russell (Dewayne), brother Richard Alpers (Amy Taylor); and niece and nephew Lily and Nathanael Alpers.
There will be a memorial celebration of his life at Club Soda at a later date, so collect your stories! The family is eternally grateful to the many friends who were so helpful during his final illness.
For those wishing to do so, donations in his name may be sent to the Block Island Rescue Squad or any animal rights/rescue organization.
