The U.S. Postal Service creed inscribed on the façade of the General Post Office in New York City states: “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Perhaps the saying could aptly be applied to members of New Shoreham’s Highways Department, as was evident by Bob Gallant’s repair work on the town’s benches during a snowstorm.
Gallant worked on the benches along Ocean Avenue near Bridge Gate Square during a snowstorm on March 10. He completed refurbishment of the benches on a cold, but sunny March 15 morning.
Gallant told The Block Island Times that it was his job to maintain the “17 benches” that are situated in different parts of the town, under the directive of Highways Supervisor Mike Shea. Gallant is also part of the crew that plows the town’s roads during snowstorms.
