Nancylee Cushing Schwartz, a longtime resident of Block Island, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 in Boynton Beach, Florida at the age of 97. She was born on Dec. 6, 1924 in New York City and was raised in Dunellen, N.J. 

She came to Block Island in 1977, where she opened Mallory’s of Block Island, a frozen yogurt store at Champlin’s Marina. That year, she married William Schwartz of Southeast Road and Pleasantville, N.Y., who predeceased her in 1991. A renowned watercolor artist, she exhibited at the Spring Street Gallery. Nancylee was a member of the Harbor Baptist Church and a volunteer for the Block Island Historical Society.  She authored and illustrated two books for children: The Block Island Coloring Book and Grandma Lives on Block Island.  

She leaves her daughter, Christopher Staples, sons Eric Schwartz and Kurt Schwartz and six grandchildren, who continue to enjoy the island. A time of remembrance and sharing was held in Dunellen on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016. Memorial donations may be made to the Block Island Rescue Squad.
