Stay in your lane

There are, in fact, rules to the road.

This applies to people who drive cars, and to people who ride mopeds and bikes.

This is a message for people who ride bikes, generated by the fact that people are openly concerned and frustrated by what is plainly seen as irresponsible behavior by those people cavorting around town on two wheels.

Here’s a simple guide:

It isn’t a good idea to lazily weave in and out of traffic. It isn’t a good idea for you and your friend to ride your bicycles side by side down the middle of the road. It isn’t safe to stop and chat with your fellow cyclers while stopped in the middle of the road. It is never a good idea to see how far you can coast without either hand on the handle-bars. It is a terrible idea to cut across traffic, particularly in Bridgegate Square, without bothering to acknowledge the cars around you. It is especially bad idea to look at your cell phone while riding a bike.

There is an enormous amount of traffic on Block Island this summer. There’s foot traffic, bike traffic, moped traffic and, particularly, car traffic. We have to share our narrow roads,  so please  do it responsibly.
