The following was sent in by the Block Island Yacht Club:

On Labor Day, Sept. 4, the Block Island Yacht Club held the Fourth Annual Around the Island Pursuit Race. This race has a different format than traditional handicap yacht racing. Instead of the yachts all starting together and then having their corrected (handicap) time applied at the finish, each yacht had its own assigned starting time, according to its racing handicap, so that all the yachts, if well-sailed, would finish the 17 mile, around the Island race course at the same time. This is known as a “Pursuit Race,” which guarantees an exciting finish.

The Race, which was postponed from Sunday due to stormy weather, turned into a beautiful sail and some exciting competition, with fresh southwest winds from 12 knots at the start, to 18 to 20 knots as the sail progressed. Winning yacht was Henry duPont’s bright red Soling Oh Behave!, which circumnavigated the Island in three hours and 19 minutes, followed by Ted Merritt’s Block Island Club Colgate 26, which placed first in the cruising class. Third to finish was Don Coxe’s Freedom 40/40 Blue Moon, followed by John Seider in another Block Island Club Colgate 26.

After the race, there was a well-attended awards party at McAloon’s Restaurant, hosted by the Block Island Yacht Club, where Commodore Ray Torrey presented the trophies to the winners in each class.

Special thanks to James Gallagher, his nephew Ben, and Elizabeth Moss who served as the event Race Committee, and Henry duPont who organized and ran the event on behalf of the Block Island Yacht Club.
