Open House at Beane Point
There will be an open house at Beane Point on Friday, July 23, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and on Thursday, July 29, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. A National Wildlife Refuge, Beane Point is a nesting area for many shore birds. Binoculars will be provided and there will also be a seine netting demonstration, and scavenger hunt. Trail mix and lemonade will be provided. To get to Beane Point travel along the beach from the Dump Road, walk from Andy’s Way, or paddle a kayak. Please, no dogs.
Full Moon Paddle
Offered by Pond and Beyond Kayak tours Saturday, July 24 and Sunday, July 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Basic experience required (no beginners please). Paddle out into the sunset and back under the rising moon. Call for reservation (401) 578-2773. A family night-time paddle will be on Monday, July 26 at 7 p.m. Paddle in the protected waters of harbor pond to see the phospherence (micro-organisms glowing in the water). Soup & Song
Classical and jazz guitarist Kyle Schofield will be featured at the Soup and Song coffeehouse’s outdoor concert series at Harbor Church on Friday, July 23, at 7 p.m. Schofield, from Concord NH, is making his third appearance at the coffeehouse and will accompany local vocalist Becca Hollaway in a set of standards. A cold soup, sandwiches, baked goods, and coffee will be available free beginning at 6:30 p.m. There is no cover charge and both tourists and local residents are always welcome. Donations are received for the musicians.
Gallery opening receptions
The Island Gallery will have an opening reception on Saturday, July 24, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for the following artists: C.C. Wolf, Marjorie Ball and prints of H.D. Wetherbee. They will be showing through Friday, August 6. Jessie Edwards Studio is showing new work by Whitney Knapp, through August 4, in her show entitled “Of Land, Sea and Skies.” Opening reception will be on July 24 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. New watercolors by Sharon Lehman will be at The Spring Street Gallery July 25 through August 1, with an opening reception on Sunday, July 25 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Fancy Nancy
You are invited to the fanciest event of the year! Author Jane O’Connor will be at the Island Bound Bookstore on Saturday, July 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. signing copies of her book “Fancy Nancy.” Activities, prizes and fancy gifts for all. Harbor Church Fair
Harbor Church will be holding its annual Church Fair and Auction on Saturday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The live auction will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Myriad treasures will be available at a White Elephant sale. There will also be a bake sale, lunch, a bounce house for the kids and a sale of fresh-roasted coffee from Taylor’s Landing in Kingston.
46th annual Barbershop Festival
Saturday, July 24 at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew Church on Chapel Street. There will be six quartets; two Sweet Adeline quartets, one mixed quartet and three men’s quartets. Tickets are $20 and are available at Red Bird Liquors and Island Bound book store, or at the door that evening.
Harbor Church Rec Center trip
The Summer Rec Center is offering an overnight trip to Six Flags New England on July 28 to 29. Students in grades 6 to 12 may sign up for the trip by calling Harbor Church at 466-5940 or contacting Rec Center director Ron Chicken on Saturday night July 24. The subsidized cost of the trip is $25 plus the cost of your own meals. Overnight accommodations will be in a Springfield area motel. Permission forms from parents are required.
American Legion meeting
On Thursday, July 29, there will be a social hour at 7 p.m. followed by a short business meeting at 8 p.m. at the Post 36 Hall, junction of Center and West Side roads.
Block Island Triathlon
The 2010 Block Island Triathlon is being held Saturday, July 31, at 3:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed for various tasks to make this event successful. If available, please call the Recreation Department at 466-3223.
Block Island Club Open House
On Sunday, August 1, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. head up Corn Neck Rd. to the Block Island Club Open House. There will be games, crafts, crabbing and fun! Don’t miss it!
Silent Auction
The Block Island Historical Society will hold a silent auction on Thursday, August 5, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. under the side tent at the society. $15 entry fee ($5 members).
Mary D Ball
Saturday, August 7, from 8 p.m. to Midnight under the tent at the Sullivan House. Tickets are $40, $75 and $150, available at the door, or send a check to The Mary D Fund, P.O. Art and Artisans Festival
The 17th annual Block Island Art and Artisans Festival will be held on Saturday, August 7, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, August 8, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Harbor Baptist Church.
