Ballard’s raises funds for two local charities

Thanks in part to the generosity of its guests, Ballard’s Beach Resort is thrilled to announce it has donated to two local charities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The donations will be split evenly between Block Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.

While admission at Ballard’s is free, guests at Ballard’s on July 5 were asked for a $10 donation at the door to help support these charities. Block Island Volunteer Fire & Rescue had to cancel its annual steak fry on July 4 — an event which typically raises enough money to support the organization throughout the year. Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation has also experienced decreased donations and has been forced to cancel several fundraisers due to the pandemic.

Ballard’s collected $4,000 in donations and resort owner Steven Filippi and his wife, Lauren, matched those funds, bringing the total donation to $8,000.

“While the $4,000 each of these organizations received won’t replace what they would have raised independently, we hope it lessens the sting. By many people making a small donation, we were able to make a big impact — together — for our community. That is a true display of the island values I’ve come to know,” said Filippi, who is also president of the Block Island Tourism Council. “During these unprecedented and difficult times, Ballard’s is proud and humbled we are able to give back to the community that has given us so much. I invite my fellow business and community leaders to do the same if they’re able.”
