Barbara Nyzio, 1945 - 2022
On Saturday, August 20, 2022, Barbara Eva Nyzio, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away at the age of 77.
Barbara was born on April 30, 1945, in Providence, R.I. to Ulric and Beatrice Cyr. She spent summers as a child enjoying Block Island, R.I. and later became an island resident. After her marriage to Stanley Nyzio in 1967, they made their home and careers as the owners of the Gables Inn. Barbara looked forward to seeing the guests that came back year after year, building many lasting friendships. Barbara and Stanley owned the inn for 51 years before retiring in 2019.
Barbara loved to knit, sew and read. In her spare time she could often be found sitting on the Gables porch working on her latest knitting project, or visiting with friends and family. During the off-season, she restored antiques and enjoyed the temperate climate of Florida. Barbara shared her love of the island with her daughters and grandchildren. Barbara was a loving and devoted grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing with toys, swimming in the pool, reading books, going to the movies, riding roller coasters, and teaching them how to knit and sew. These happy times are what she cherished the most.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Stanley, daughters Stephanie (husband Dan) and Karen (husband Andrew), and her sister, Lorraine Cyr. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Brandon, Cameron, Jacob, Justine, and Kayla.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Block Island, R.I. at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Block Island Conservancy, or the Alzheimer’s Association.
