On Sunday, May 26, 2019 from 3 to 5 p.m., the ChowdaFest at the Block Island Maritime Institute is the place to be and be seen. It’s all about determining, by blind taste test and popular vote, the best chowda on Block Island.
This year 12 restaurant competitors will put their best efforts into convincing between 400 to 500 local “official tasters” that their secret recipe is worthy of being dubbed Block Island’s Best Chowda. For many years, the winner has been crowned on Memorial Day weekend in BIMI’s Cove Room. As usual, the chowdas will be professionally dished out by Shannon Cotter-Marsella’s seventh grade volunteer ladlers and friends from the Block Island School. BIMI helps fund their yearly class sailing trip in Maine and this is their way of saying “Thanks!”
Don’t forget to buy your tickets for the ChowdaFest Raffle for a dozen lobstas, a mess of clams, a bunch of mussels and a case of beer — enough great food for a big party — for sale in front of the Block Island Grocery the week before the ChowdaFest. Proceeds from the raffle go directly to fund the many programs at the Block Island Maritime Center that are enjoyed by folks of all ages throughout the summer. Check out all the programs at www.bimaritime.org.
Whether your favorite is Rhode Island, Manhattan, New England or Long Island, make sure that you get there early to sample each of the great chowdas, spend some time with your friends, listen to the great sounds by DJ Libre and vote! It’s a great time. Don’t miss it.
