Common Ground Coffee House
Friday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. the Common Ground Coffeehouse will present the film "Captain Fantastic," starring Viggo Mortensen as a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education, deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest. A family tragedy forces them out of the woods and into contact with the society they have shunned. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. and coffee and dessert will be available before the film. No charge, but donations are welcome.
2017 July 4th celebration
The theme of this year’s parade is “Block Island Memories.” Fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 2 (rain date July 3). Donations are needed to reserve bands and fireworks. Please send to Double Ender Committee, PO Box 808, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
Amnesty Month at Library
January is Amnesty Month at Island Free Library. All current fines will be waived. The library asks that instead of paying fines, please bring in a non-perishable food item for the Helping Hands Food Pantry.

Helping Hands Food Pantry
The next Helping Hands Food Pantry is Wednesday, Feb. 8. Helping Hands Food Pantry is open every other Wednesday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Harbor Church.
Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Island Free Library will be holding Power Hours for Scholars. Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Enter through the side door.
Lunch Bunch is every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

Film & Soup
Island Free Library and The Nature Conservancy presents Film & Soup showing: "The END of the Line" on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6:30 p.m. at the Island Free Library. Bring a spoon and bowl/cup to share in the soup.
The Bereavement Group will be meeting on Sunday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. at St. Ann's By-The-Sea.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Church.
Bow Hunter Safety Course
The Recreation Department is sponsoring a Bow Hunter Safety Course. The class is two days. Saturday, Feb. 18, will be an Archery Proficiency test and Sunday, Feb. 19, will be classroom instruction. The cost is $35 per person. The DEM requires a minimum of 10 students. Deadline for registration is Friday, Feb. 10. Registration forms will be available at the Recreation office or online at new-shoreham.com.
Community CPR Course
There will be a Community CPR Course Held on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. at the Resuce Building. The course is $25, call dispatch at 466-3200 to register.
BIYC Maritime Scholarship
Applications for the B.I. Yacht Club Maritime Scholarship will be accepted until Feb. 1, 2017. Students who have graduated from the Block Island School, intend to pursue maritime careers, and are currently enrolled in a college undergraduate maritime program are eligible.
