Common Ground Coffee House
On Friday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. Common Ground Coffeehouse will present the film "Queen of Katwe."  This film is based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, the smart, courageous kid from the grindingly poor shantytown of Katwe, in the Ugandan capital of Kampala, whose world rapidly changed when she was introduced to a missionary who teaches children to play chess.  A complimentary supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. with coffee and dessert just before the film. No charge but donations are welcome.

2017 July 4th celebration
The theme of this year’s parade is “Block Island Memories.” Fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 2 (rain date July 3). Donations are needed to reserve bands and fireworks. Please send to Double Ender Committee, PO Box 808, Block Island, R.I. 02807.

Helping Hands Food Pantry
The next Helping Hands Food Pantry is Wednesday, Feb. 8. Helping Hands Food Pantry is open every other Wednesday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Harbor Church.

Study Hall
Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Island Free Library will be holding Power Hours for Scholars. Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Enter through the side door.

Lunch Bunch is every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

Valentine’s Day Candy Sale
The Block Island School Friends will be selling See’s Chocolates starting Friday, Feb. 3, to Feb. 14, at the Island Free Library. Great chocolates, great choices! All proceeds benefit the Block Island School. Please stop in to shop during library hours.

Feb. 10, Kids Chemistry Science Show 12:30 p.m. At Home Science We would love to have your families join us at the Island Free Library for an engaging afternoon of experiments! Kids will be receiving science education from two teachers, watching demonstrations, and performing hands-on experiments.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be meeting on Monday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Church.

Bow Safety Course Deadline Approaching
The Recreation Department is sponsoring a Bow Hunter Safety Course. The class is two days. Saturday, Feb. 18,  will be an Archery Proficiency test and Sunday, Feb. 19, will be classroom instruction. The cost is $35 per person. The DEM requires a minimum of 10 students. Deadline for registration is Friday, Feb. 10. Registration forms will be available at the Recreation office or online at new-shoreham.com.
