Common Ground Coffeehouse
Common Ground Coffeehouse will present Ed McGuirl singing folk, blues, Celtic and original songs on Friday, May 12, at 7 p.m. This will kick off the Opioid Conference but all in good fun. McGuirl also works as a substance abuse counselor and others will introduce themes for the weekend event. NAMI-BI is providing a potluck supper for all at 6:30 p.m.

Study Hall 
Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Island Free Library will be holding Power Hours for Scholars. Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Enter through the side door.

Lunch Bunch 
Lunch Bunch is held every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. There will be two more Lunch Bunch gatherings this year, on May 16, and May 23. Then will begin the regular summer hiatus and return in the fall after everyone has had a pleasant, safe and happy summer break.

Hurricanes Home Games 
The Girls JV will be playing Wickford on Saturday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. The Girls Varsity will be playing Wheeler on Saturday, May 13, at 12:30 p.m. The Boys Varsity will be playing BCA on Tuesday, May 16, at 12:30 p.m. The Boys JV will be playing Jamestown on Thursday, May 18, at 3:30 p.m. The Girls Varsirty will be playing Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Boys Varsity will be playing Grove on Monday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. The Girls JV will be playing Curtis Corner on Tuesday, May 23, at 12:30 p.m. All games are played at Heinz Field.

Beach Cleanup Day 
Washington Trust is sponsoring its first-ever Statewide Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at eight beaches across Rhode Island, including Fred Benson Town Beach on Block Island. Help the Rhode Island community ready our beaches for the summer season and preserve our state’s greatest resources. All are welcome.

Opioid Speakers & Events
Saturday, May 13, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Island Free Library there is a keynote speech with Dr. Alan Wartenberg with audience Q&A and breakfast. Saturday, May 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Island Free Library is the Ross Campbell Memorial Award Prsentation, Panel and Discussion. “What does BI need to do now?”

Spring Bird Migration 
Witness the spectacular spring plumage of the seasonal bird migration. Saturday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. Meet on Corn Neck Rd. across from the Labyrinth. Sponsored by the James Stover Exploration Series.

Conservation Day Activities
There a lots of Conservation Day activities going on at the Solkviken Preserve on Saturday May 13, from 12 noon to 2 p.m.

Shad Bloom Race 
The annual Shad Bloom 10K Race is being held on Saturday, May 13, at 1 p.m. at the Block Island School. Sponsored by the Block Island Recreation Dept. For more information call  401 466-3223. Register online at  active.com.

Conservancy Day Celebration 
There is a Conservancy Day Reception on Saturday, May 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Narragansett Inn. Tracy Heinz will receive this year’s Bayberry Wreath Award.

Earth Mother’s Day 
There is an Earth Mother’s Day and Pavilion Celebration on Sunday, May 14, at 11:15 a.m. at the Ocean View Pavilion.

Pasta Diner 
The Early Learning Center’s Annual Pasta Diner is on Tuesday, May 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Oar. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids.

Taize Prayer Service
There will be a Taize Prayer Service on Wednesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at St. Ann’s By-The-Sea.

Bake Book & Bloom Sale
The annual Bake, Book, and Bloom Sale is being held on Saturday, May 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Island Free Library.

Chowder Cook-Off
Sponsored by the Block Island Maritime Institute with entertainment by Dj Libre. BIMI Center, Cove Room (Ocean Ave. at West Side Road). Sunday, May 28, from  3 to 5 p.m. Admission: Individuals $15; Family $25 (children 12 and under free).

2017 July 4th celebration   
The theme of this year’s parade is “Block Island Memories.” Fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 2 (rain date July 3). Donations are needed to reserve bands and fireworks: Double Ender Committee, PO Box 808, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
