Common Ground Coffeehouse
Friday, May 19, at 7 p.m. the Common Ground Coffeehouse at Harbor Church presents the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” based on an unfinished book by James Baldwin, with memories of his friends Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. The film was nominated for a 2016 Academy Award as Best Documentary Feature. A complimentary supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. with coffee and dessert available just before the film. No charge, but donations are appreciated.
Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Island Free Library will be holding Power Hours for Scholars. Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Enter through the side door.
Lunch Bunch is held every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. There will be one more Lunch Bunch gathering this year, May 23.

Hurricanes Home Games
The Boys Varsity will be playing Times Squared Academy on Friday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. The Girls Varsity will be playing Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, May 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The Boys Varsity will be playing Grove on Monday, May 22, at 12:30 p.m. The Girls JV will be playing Curtis Corner on Tuesday, May 23, at 12:30 p.m. All games are played at Heinz Field.
Spring Concert & Fundraiser
The Block Island School’s Music and Art Department Presents the “Embrace Your Place” Spring Concert and Fundraiser on Wednesday, May 24 at 1 p.m. Locally-themed performances by students and original student-created artwork will be available for purchase. All proceeds go towards Conserfest and other conservation efforts.
The Harbor Church will host Neely Bruce for a concert of piano music, Wednesday, May 24, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. He is Professor of Music at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, and well-known as a composer of operas and choral music. No charge for the concert, but donations are welcome.
Taize Prayer Service
There will be a Taize Prayer Service on Wednesday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at St. Ann’s By-The-Sea.
Historical Society Open House
The Block Island Historical Society will be having their Open House on Friday, May 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. All are welcome! No Charge!
Bake, Book & Bloom Sale
The Bake, Book & Bloom Sale will be held on Saturday, May 27, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Island Free Library. Delicious baked goods, awesome books, glorious blooms of every sort from Clark Farms, a Silent Auction and URI Master Gardeners to answer questions and test your soil. Goose and Garden is donating 10% of vegetable, perennials and annual plant sales starting Friday, May 26, through the weekend.

Not New Boutique
The Not New Boutique is open on Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Andrew Parish Center. Sponsored by the Catholic Ladies Guild.
The first Farmers Market of the season is Saturday, June 10, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Legion Park.
2017 July 4th celebration
The theme of this year’s parade is “Block Island Memories.” Fireworks will be held on Sunday, July 2 (rain date July 3). Donations are needed to reserve bands and fireworks: Double Ender Committee, PO Box 808, Block Island, R.I. 02807.
