Common Ground Coffeehouse
Friday, June 23, at 7 p.m. Common Ground Coffeehouse presents David Frye, son of the late island resident Joya Verde. All welcome at 6:30 p.m. for a free supper, along with international students, or join us at 7 p.m. for coffee and cookies. Donations for the musician are appreciated.

Annual American Legion Auxiliary Yard Sale
The American Legion Auxiliary Yard Sale is on June 23 and 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of Ocean Ave. and Connecticut Ave. Donation items can be dropped off early morning on sale days.
There is a reception at Jessie Edwards Studio on Saturday, June 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring paintings by Marilyn Bogdanffy. There is a reception at Spring Street Gallery on Tuesday, June 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring printmaking and mixed media by Karin Bruckner. There is a reception at Spring Street Gallery on Saturday July 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring paintings by Amy Veldman-Wilson.
Horseshoe Crab Survey & Tagging
There will be Horseshoe Crab Surveys and Tagging on Saturday, June 24, at 9 a.m. at Andy’s Way and at 10 a.m. at Cormorant Cove and on Monday, June 26, at 11a.m. at Andy’s Way.
Night Sky Viewing
There will be a Night Sky Viewing on Saturday, June 24, at 9 p.m. at the Hodge Preserve on Corn Neck Road. Bring a blanket or chair. Alternate date of Sunday, June 25, if sky conditions are too cloudy.
BIMI Tuesday Night Lecture
On Tuesday, June 27, at 7 p.m., the BIMI Center will be hosting Bob Oberg, Vice President for Development at The College Crusade, with a lecture on Kayak Fishing for Big Stripers. This presentation will bring together the various components of kayak fishing — rigging, tackle, electronics, strategy, and safety, with a special focus on tube and worm fishing.
American Legion Meeting
American Legion Post 36 is having its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 29, at Legion Hall on West Side Rd. at 5:15 p.m. All active military and veterans visiting Block Island are invited to join us.
The Block Island Historical Society is having a 75th Anniversary Exhibit Opening “Surrounded by the Sea” on Saturday, July 1, from 5 to 8 p.m.
The Block Island Maritime Institute is having a Fireworks Picnic on Sunday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 for adults and $$20 for kids.
There will be live music at the Fred Benson Beach Pavilion on Sunday, July 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. with the fireworks display following at dusk (around 9 p.m.)
Arts & Grafts Guild Fair
The Arts & Crafts Guild Fair is on Monday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Historical Society.
July 4th Activities
The July 4th Parade begins at 11 a.m. at Legion Park and ends on Water St. The annual Fire Dept. Steak Fry is at 12 noon at the Fire Barn. Tickets are $25/per person. There is also a Hot Dog Eating Contest at the Poor People’s Pub at 12 noon.
Early Learning Center Registration
Fall Registration is now open for the Early Learning Center. For information call 401-466-9695.
This season the Harbor Church is offering child care and fun activities during the Sunday morning worship service from 10 to 11 a.m. No charge and no reservation required. Two adults stay with the children, one of them certified in babysitting and first aid.
”Seeking Shelter from the Storm” - Daniel Berrigan, William Stringfellow, and Block Island is an exhibition that will run from July 11 to October 9, at the Island Free Library.
Free RISD Classes
Expand your artistic abilities. If you love art, are between the ages of 14 and 25, and attended the Block Island School for at least one year, you can apply for the Thomas McAleer RISD Scholarship.
