Common Ground Coffeehouse at Harbor Church
The Common Ground Coffeehouse at the Harbor Church presents Oscar winners Frances McDormand (Best Actress) and Sam Rockwell (Best Supporting Actor) in the darkly comic drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” on Friday, March 9, at 7:15 p.m. (Rescheduled from March 2). After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, a grieving and angry mother (McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at the town's revered chief of police (Woody Harrelson, also nominated for Best Supporting Actor). The film earned four other Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay (which it won). A light supper will be served at 6:30 p.m.; coffee and dessert will be available before the film begins at 7:15. No charge, but donations are welcome.
Island Free Library events
Fun activities after school every Friday at the Island Free Library at 1 p.m.
- A different activity every week like Legos, arts and crafts, board games, and STEM projects.
- Kids’ yoga returns to the library! Fridays, 10 a.m. toddlers; 10:30 a.m. pre-schoolers. Free and fun for all.
- On Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., the Island Free Library is hosting “Power Hours for Scholars.” Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Free pizza!
Peanut Butter Drive
Washington Trust will be holding its annual Peanut Butter Drive throughout the month of March. Residents are asked to bring in non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Helping Hands Food Pantry.
Lunch Bunch is every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
Ecumenical Choir Practice
There will be Ecumenical Choir Practice for the Easter Concert every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Church.
Book Reading at Island Bound
Author Lynne Heinzmann will read from her new book, “Frozen Voices,” which tells the tale of the sinking of the Larchmont in 1907. Island Bound Bookstore on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. The public is invited to this free event.
Helping Hands Food Pantry
Every other Wednesday at the Harbor Church. The next Helping Hands Food Pantry will be Wednesday, March 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Block Island Gardeners “Spring Forward”
The Block Island Gardeners invites the community to “Spring Forward” with a discussion of upcoming events and community projects on Monday, March 12 at 11 a.m. in the Island Free Library. Please use the side door for the downstairs meeting room. Light refreshments will be served. Call 466-5676 if any questions.
Back by popular demand are the Lenten Luncheons at Harbor Church! Meet at noon every Thursday through March 22. A light lunch will be served. The overall theme is: “When Bad Feelings Happen to Good People: What we can learn from Jesus.” All are welcome.
Postponed due to the frigid temperatures on New Year’s Day, the annual Polar Plunge is scheduled for Sunday, March 18 at noon at Town Beach.
St. Patrick’s Day Buffet
The Block Island Lions Club is hosting it's annual St Patricks Day Buffet on Saturday, March 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Yellow Kittens. $18 adult ticket includes corned beef n cabbage and all the fixings including beer. Proceeds benefit the meeting street school.
B.I. School Chili Fest Cook-off
Got a great chili recipe? Take the chili challenge. On Tuesday, March 20, submit a large crock-pot’s worth of chili to the Block Island School’s Ceramics Department’s Chili Fest and you could win! Don’t have a good recipe, but love chili? Come and sample the goods. Buy a handmade bowl and fill it with a variety of chili (cornbread and soft drink included) and vote for your favorite.
