Common Ground Coffeehouse at Harbor Church
This week, the coffeehouse at Harbor Church presents a 2018 Academy Award Best Picture nominee: “Lady Bird,” Friday, March 16 at 7:15 p.m. According to the Village Voice, this “heartfelt coming-of-age story that perfectly captures the bittersweet transition from adolescence to dawning adulthood. The film received Oscar nominations, but no statuettes, for its writer-director Greta Gerwig; Best Actress (Saoirse Ronan as the teenager who is exactly like her mother); and Best Supporting Actress (Laurie Metcalf as the mom). As always, a light supper will be served at 6:30 p.m., and coffee and dessert just before the film. No charge, but donations are welcome.
St. Patrick’s Day Buffet
The Block Island Lions Club is hosting its annual St. Patricks Day buffet on Saturday, March 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Yelow Kittens. Corned beef n’ cabbage and all the fixings. $18 per person. Proceeds to benefit the Meeting Street School. Doors open at noon.
Postponed due to the frigid temperatures on New Year’s Day, the annual Polar Plunge is scheduled for Sunday, March 18 at noon at Town Beach.
Island Free Library events
Fun activities after school every Friday at the Island Free Library at 1 p.m.
-A different activity every week like Legos, arts and crafts, board games, and STEM projects.
-Kids’ yoga returns to the library! Fridays, 10 a.m. toddlers; 10:30 a.m. pre-schoolers. Free and fun for all.
-On Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., the Island Free Library is hosting “Power Hours for Scholars.” Staff will be on hand to supervise and facilitate research, monitor group projects, and answer basic comprehension questions. Free pizza!
Meet Tuesday, March 20 at 8 a.m. for the Crazy-as-a-Coot Bird Walk. Call (401) 595-7055 for the location. On Saturday, March 24 at 9 a.m. gather at Mansion Beach for some early spring beachcombing. This is a guided walk for families (with kids of all ages) and individuals.
B.I. School Chili Fest Cook-off
Got a great chili recipe? Take the chili challenge. On Tuesday, March 20, submit a large crock-pot’s worth of chili to the Block Island School’s Ceramics Department’s Chili Fest and you could win! Don’t have a good recipe, but love chili? Come and sample the goods. Buy a handmade bowl and fill it with a variety of chili (cornbread and soft drink included) and vote for your favorite. Serving 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.. Chili drop off time is 5 p.m. Want to enter? Call Lisa at 466-2629.
Helping Hands Food Pantry
Every other Wednesday at the Harbor Church. The next Helping Hands Food Pantry will be Wednesday, March 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.
Back by popular demand are the Lenten Luncheons at Harbor Church! Meet at noon every Thursday through March 22. A light lunch will be served. The overall theme is: “When Bad Feelings Happen to Good People: What we can learn from Jesus.” All are welcome.
Casey Farm Project Chick
Friday, March 23 at 11 a.m. a Casey Farm educator will present an informational workshop at the Island Free Library, including a rare egg collection and slideshow about heritage chickens and eggs.Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions. Directly after the program the eggs will begin their 21 days of incubation. All are welcome! Project Chick is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
Lunch Bunch is every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.
Ecumenical Choir Practice
There will be Ecumenical Choir Practice for the Easter Concert every Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Harbor Church.
