Common Ground Coffeehouse

Allysen Callery will bring her “ghost folk” guitar sound and her original songs to Common Ground Coffeehouse this Friday May 11, at 7 p.m. Callery plays guitar “finger style,” picking melody and harmony, and has a soft but clear voice reminiscent of the folk revival of the 70s. Complimentary supper and dessert are served at 6:30 p.m. each week.

Mason’s Movers

Poor People’s Pub’s annual MDA benefit, Saturday, May 12, for Mason Miro. PPP will donate 10 percent of the night’s sales to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. From 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Out And About On Block Island

Saturday, May 12: Spring Bird Migration. Meet on Corn Neck Road across from the Labyrinth at 10:30 a.m.

Sunday, May 13: Earth Mother’s Day and Pavilion Celebration. Meet at the The Ocean View Foundation Pavilion at 11:15 a.m. Events sponsored by the Block Island Conservancy, Block Island Land Trust, and The Nature Conservancy.

Island Free Library Events  

- Fun activities after school every Friday at the Island Free Library at 1 p.m. A different activity every week: Legos, arts and crafts, board games, and STEM projects.

- NAMI-BI’s Second Annual Spring Conference on Saturday, May 19. The conference starts Friday, May 18 at Harbor Church. 

- May Film Series every Thursday at 7 p.m. May 17: “Inside Out”; May 24: “Infinitely Polar Bear”; May 31: “Lars and The Real Girl.”

Lunch Bunch is every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center.

Hurricanes Softball 

The Hurricanes Girls Varsity Softball team will have home games on Saturday, May 12, 12:30 p.m. at Heinz Field. The Varsity Baseball team has a home game May 15, 12:30 p.m. Come show your support. Go Hurricanes!

Not New Boutique 

Time to clean out your closets. Accepting donations of good, clean used clothing. Items may be dropped off at the St. Andrew Parish Center. Opening sale is Saturday, June 9. Then every Wednesday starting June 20 throughout the summer.

Shad Bloom Run 

The Run starts at the Block Island School off High Street at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 12. Registration costs $25 per person. Sign up in advance and view the course by visiting active.com.  If you have questions, call Dave or Cindy at the Recreation Department at (401) 466-3223. The date will be moved to the next day, Sunday, May 13, if the boats don’t run.

Diabetes Workshop

Held Wednesdays through June 6 from 12:15 to 2:30 p.m. at the Island Free Library. Learn how to live with diabetes and to make healthy choices. The event is open to those living with diabetes or their caregivers. For more information, contact Deb Olivier at (401) 788-2314.

The Block Island Early Learning Center’s annual pasta dinner will be held Tuesday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Narragansett Inn.

Organ Concert

On Monday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m., Walter Hilse will present a concert including music by Bach, Vivaldi, Franck, Hilse, and Mulet. Walter is an annual visitor who teaches at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, and is a freelance composer and performer. Donations are requested.  

Trip to Blithewold Mansion and Gardens

Please join the Block Island Gardeners for a private tour through Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum in Bristol on Tuesday, May 22. Van transportation to Blithewold and back is provided through the Block Island Recreation Department. Participants are asked to meet on the 8:15 a.m. boat, with return on the 5:00 p.m. boat. Cost of tour is $8 per person, payable at the mansion. Eagle Scout Ceremony

An Eagle Court of Honor for André Miller at the Harbor Baptist Church Reflection Garden will be held on Sunday, May 20 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Reception with refreshments after ceremony.

BIMI’s Chowder Cookoff

Chefs from the island’s finest restaurants compete to earn the title of “Best Chowder on Block Island. Sunday, May 27, from 3 to 5 p.m., at the BIMI Center. Entertainment by DJ Libré; service provided by Block Island School students.
