Island Free Library Programs
The Island Free Library invites everyone to participate in the programs listed below. More information and Zoom links available at islandfreelibrary.org.
Library Hours: The Library is now open for in-person browsing. Tuesdays 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.


Take & Make Craft Kits for preschoolers. Available for pick up Tuesdays only.


Outdoor Storytime: With Ms. Morgan at 10:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required and all safety protocols will be followed.


Book Bingo at Night Market on Dodge Street - August 5, 5 to 6 p.m.
Night Market on Dodge Street - Stop by the Island Free Library to visit our Story Walk and Book It Forward programs as well as visit the local community shops.


Magic the Gathering: August 6, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bring your cards and enjoy the fun.


2021 Mah Jongg: Come join us outdoors to play a game or two of Mah Jongg. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 2021 Mah Jongg cards are available. (Cancelled if raining.)
Stitch Together: Bring your projects (knitting, crochet, weaving and embroidery) and join us from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on our front patio. (No Stitch Together on rainy days.)


2021 Summer Reading Program “Tail and Tales.” Sign up at Islandfreelibrary.beanstack.org. Kids, teens, and adults welcome.

Free pH soil testing.
The URI Master Gardener program is now offering free pH soil testing on Block Island.

Take a soil sample, then place it in the drop-off box at the Island Free Library during business hours. Directions are available at https://web.uri.edu/mastergardener/soil-testing-service. Questions? Call Maude Chasse at (203) 233-4889. This is an ongoing program.

Living with Loss Support Group and Caretakers Support Group
The next Block Island’s Living with Loss Support Group and Caregivers Support Group will be meeting in person at the Community Center on August 10. Living with Loss will begin at 3 p.m., and Caretakers Support will begin at 4 p.m. Meetings are free of charge and will be held every other week. International Student Center for Summer Workers at Harbor Church
Summer student workers are welcome on Tuesdays for a free dinner from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and to use the recreation center from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. American student workers are welcome to come for cultural exchanges with students from all over the world. Soup Group returns
The Senior Advisory Committee announces that Soup Group will be held on Tuesdays, at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Please make reservations by calling Gail Pierce at (401) 466-5470. This is a very nice gathering to bring a friend to, or meet a new one. Need a ride? Call Gail too.

Soundwaves Movies on the Beach
Soundwaves at Fred Benson Town Beach is showing the 1984 movie “The Neverending Story,” (Rated PG) on August 3, at sunset. Experimental music and art one hour before showtime. Admission is free. Donations encouraged.

Seeking Shelter: A Place of Place, Faith, and Resistance opening reception. August 5 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Environmental Threats to Conservation on Block Island with Michael Oppenheimer, Keith Lewis and Corrie Heinz. August 5 from 7 to 9 p.m.
Block Island Arts & Crafts Guild Fair
Sunday August 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Historical Society. A portion of the proceeds from sales goes to funding scholarships for students of the Block Island School.
The Mary D. Ball is back
The Mary D. Ball is back. Saturday, August 7, 2021 5 to 9 p.m. at the Sullivan House. Music, dinner, and dancing under the tent and the stars for all to celebrate and support The Mary D. fund, helping those in need for over 50 years. A great night for a great cause. See you there!
5K Family Fun Run or Walk

The National Alliance on Mental Illness-BI and the Block Island Medical Center are cosponsoring a beach run or walk, Saturday, August 7 at the Fred Benson Beach Pavillion. Register in advance at RunSignup.com (t-shirt guaranteed) or paperless system requiring a smartphone (or other device that can connect to the internet) the same day of the race. Registration begins at 4 p.m., race starts at 5 p.m. T-shirts, trophies, and medals. Bring the
whole family. Pets welcome. A great pre-dinner event.
Blues on the Block
A rebranding of Blues on the Beach. Free concerts will be held on Wednesday Aug. 11, and Aug. 25 at 5:30 p.m. Fred Benson Town Beach.
Celebration of Conservation
Saturday, August 21, at 8 a.m. Across from Peter Wood’s in The Meadow, on Old Mill Road. All are welcome. Sponsored by Peter Wood and the Block Island Ecumenical Ministries.
The Nature Conservancy and Block Island Conservancy presents:
Night Sky Viewing at Hodge Preserve. Saturday, July 31 at 9 p.m. (August 1 will be the back-up day if the sky is unclear). Call (401) 595-7055 to sign up.
Nature Hot Spots, Nature Van, and weekly hikes
The Nature Conservancy and Block Island Conservancy offer a variety of nature walks and programs for all to enjoy. Check out the ad on page 9 for this week’s schedule of guided trail hikes, bird walks, cool community science outings, night sky viewing and more.

Check out the new Nature Van! Parked at a trailhead each day (Tues. - Sat.) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the van will be at Rodman’s Hollow Tuesdays, Clay Head Preserve Wednesdays, Solviken Thursdays, Nathan Mott Park Fridays, and Sachem Pond on Saturdays. Stop by to pick up a trail map and to learn more about Block Island’s nature.
Not New Boutique
Sale of gently used clothing, shoes, and bags. Every Wednesday (rain date Thursdays) on the grounds of St. Andrew Parish Center. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations of good, clean clothing, shoes, pocketbooks and jewelry are being accepted in the box by the door on the “lower level.” The Ladies Guild thanks all who have made this possible and says the Boutique has had a great start.
Block Island Farmers Market
The 2021 Farmers Market season at Legion Park has begun!. Markets will be held every Saturday and Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Don’t forget to bring your kitchen scraps for composting. Acceptable composting materials include fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings, coffee grounds, and eggshells.
