Island Free Library Programs
The Island Free Library invites everyone to participate in the programs listed below.

Library Hours: The Library is now open for in-person browsing. Tuesdays 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Tuesdays:

Take & Make Craft Kits for preschoolers. Available for pick up Tuesdays only.

Wednesdays:

Outdoor Storytime: With Ms. Morgan at 10:30 a.m. All safety protocols will be followed.

Fridays:

Magic the Gathering: August 27, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bring your cards and enjoy the fun.

Saturdays:

2021 Mah Jongg: Come join us outdoors to play a game or two of Mah Jongg. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 2021 Mah Jongg cards are available. (Cancelled if raining.) All levels of players welcome.
Stitch Together: Bring your projects (knitting, crochet, weaving and embroidery) and join us from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on our front patio. (No Stitch Together on rainydays.)

Free pH soil testing
The URI Master Gardener program is now offering free pH soil testing on Block Island. Take a soil sample, then place it in the drop-off box at the Island Free Library during business hours. Directions are available at https://web.uri.edu/mastergardener/soil-testing-service. Questions? Call Maude Chasse at (203) 233-4889. This is an ongoing program.

Wake Up Well Podcast
Block Island’s community podcast, Wake Up Well, launches its second season and continues to ask questions about personal wellbeing and our collective responsibility and power to keep the island well. You can listen to Season Two on Anchor or Spotify and you can join the conversation at wakeupwellblockisland@gmail.com.

Living with Loss Support Group and Caretakers Support Group
The next Block Island’s Living with Loss Support Group and Caregivers Support Group will be meeting in person at the Community Center on September 7. Living with Loss will begin at 3 p.m., and Caretakers Support will begin at 4 p.m. Meetings are free of charge and will be held every other week. International Student Center for Summer Workers at Harbor Church
The center has closed for the 2021 summer season. For more information, or to make a donation to the center, contact the church office at (401) 466-5940.

Soup Group returns
The Senior Advisory Committee announces that Soup Group is being held on Tuesdays, at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Please make reservations by calling Gail Pierce at (401) 466-5470. This is a very nice gathering to bring a friend to, or meet a new one. Need a ride? Call Gail too.

Soundwaves Movies on the Beach
Soundwaves at Fred Benson Town Beach is showing the 2003 movie “School of Rock,” (Rated PG-13) on August 31, at sunset. Experimental music and art one hour before showtime. Admission is free. Donations encouraged.

At the Historical Society
“Block Island’s Grand Hotels: A Slide Presentation” with Shirlyne Gobern and George Mott. September 9, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Block Island Arts & Crafts Guild Fair
Sunday September 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Historical Society. A portion of the proceeds from sales goes to funding scholarships for students of the Block Island School.

Nature Hot Spots and Nature Van
Nature Conservancy and Block Island Conservancy offer a variety of nature walks and programs for all to enjoy. Check out the ad in this paper for the weekly schedule of guided trail hikes, bird walks, cool community science outings, night sky viewing and more.
Check out the new Nature Van! Parked at a trailhead each day (Tues. - Sat.) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the van will be at Rodman’s Hollow Tuesdays, Clay Head Preserve Wednesdays, Solviken Thursdays, Nathan Mott Park Fridays, and Sachem Pond on Saturdays. Stop by to pick up a trail map and to learn more about Block Island’s nature.

Block Island Yacht Club Around the Island Yacht Pursuit Race
The BIYC is hosting the Around the Island yacht race on Sunday, Sept. 5, for racing and cruising sailboats. This family-friendly event is scheduled to start at noon with a pre-race skippers meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. at the New Harbor Boat Basin, near the Oar Restaurant. Awards will be presented to racers in both spinnaker and cruising classes at the Beachhead Restaurant at 6:15 p.m. For info and registration, see www.regattanetwork.com/event/21899. Sale of gently used clothing, shoes, and bags. Every Wednesday (rain date Thursdays) on the grounds of St. Andrew Parish Center. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The final sale days will be Wed., Sept. 1, and Wed., Sept. 8. Please, no donations after Friday, August 20. Donations for next summer will start on May, 1, 2022. Thanks for a great year!
Block Island Farmers Market
Markets will be held every Saturday and Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Don’t forget to bring your kitchen scraps for composting. Acceptable composting materials include fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings, coffee grounds, and eggshells.
