2021 Mah Jongg: Come join us outdoors to play a game or two of Mah Jongg. 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. 2021 Mah Jongg cards are available. (Cancelled if raining.) All levels of players welcome.
Stitch Together: Bring your projects (knitting, crochet, weaving and embroidery) and join us from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on our front patio. (No Stitch Together on rainy days.)
Free pH soil testing
The URI Master Gardener program is now offering free pH soil testing on Block Island. Take a soil sample, then place it in the drop-off box at the Island Free Library during business hours. Directions are available at https://web.uri.edu/mastergardener/soil-testing-service. Questions? Call Maude Chasse at (203) 233-4889. This is an ongoing program.
Wake Up Well Podcast
Block Island’s community podcast, Wake Up Well, launches its second season and continues to ask questions about personal well-being and our collective responsibility and power to keep the island well. You can listen to Season Two on Anchor or Spotify and you can join the conversation at wakeupwellblockisland@gmail.com.
Living with Loss Support Group and Caretakers Support Group
The next Block Island’s Living with Loss Support Group and Caregivers Support Group will be meeting in person at the Community Center on September 7. Living with Loss will begin at 3 p.m., and Caretakers Support will begin at 4 p.m. Meetings are free of charge and will be held every other week. Soup Group returns

The Senior Advisory Committee announces that Soup Group is being held on Tuesdays, at 12:30 p.m. at the Community Center. Please make reservations by calling Gail Pierce at (401) 466-5470. This is a very nice gathering to bring a friend to, or meet a new one. Need a ride? Call Gail too.
Block Island Farmers Market

Markets will be held every Saturday and Wednesday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Don’t forget to bring your kitchen scraps for composting. Acceptable composting materials include fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings, coffee grounds, and eggshells. Wednesday markets will be held at the Manisses; Saturday markets are at Legion Park.

“Block Island’s Grand Hotels: A Slide Presentation” with Shirlyne Gobern and George Mott. September 9, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Block Island Arts & Crafts Guild Fair
Sunday September 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Historical Society. A portion of the proceeds from sales goes to funding scholarships for students of the Block Island School.

Block Island Yacht Club Around the Island Yacht Pursuit Race
The BIYC is hosting the Around the Island yacht race on Sunday, Sept. 5, for racing and cruising sailboats. This family-friendly event is scheduled to start at noon with a pre-race skippers meeting scheduled for 10 a.m. at the New Harbor Boat Basin, near the Oar Restaurant. Awards will be presented to racers in both spinnaker and cruising classes at the Beachhead Restaurant at 6:15 p.m. For info and registration, see www.regattanetwork.com/event/21899. Committee for the Great Salt Pond Annual Meeting
Please join the CGSP for its annual meeting on Sunday Sept. 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Narragansett Inn. The business portion will begin at 4, followed by speakers: Elizabeth Herron with Watershed Watch to give an update on the water quality work being done in the Pond; Block Island Town Manager Maryanne Crawford and Harbormaster Kate McConville for a review of activity on the Pond this summer; and an update from attorney Dan Prentiss on the Champlin’s case.
Block Island Gardeners’ Luncheon

The BI Gardeners invite the community to their Edibles Luncheon at the Narragansett Inn on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 12 noon. Please bring a dish from your garden (or someone else’s) to share. The lunch will be followed by a 20-minute TED Talk: “How Trees Talk to Each Other.”

Lions Club September Golf Tournament
The Block Island Lions Club Golf Tournament is on Monday, Sept. 20 at the Exeter Country Club. The golf tournament is open to all. Cost: $110 per player. This is a fundraiser for the Block Island School scholarship fund and educational enrichment programs. Join as a single player or submit a team. Price includes boat ticket, breakfast voucher on the boat, 18 holes of golf, lunch and drink ticket at the clubhouse. The group departs on the 8:15 a.m. ferry. Sale of gently used clothing, shoes, and bags. Every Wednesday (rain date Thursdays) on the grounds of St. Andrew Parish Center. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The final sale days will be Wed., Sept. 1, and Wed., Sept. 8. Please, no donations after Friday, August 20. Donations for next summer will start on May, 1, 2022. Thanks for a great year!
