Catch some soccer or volleyball home games this weekend
After a years-long drought brought on by the Covid pandemic, the Block Island Hurricanes have “re-fielded” a high school soccer team under new head coach and B.I. School graduate Danii Pineda.
After an initial loss at Providence Country Day, which had some 25 players on a hot summer afternoon wearing the ‘Canes down on the pitch, the team rebounded and beat Juanita Sanchez 3-0 at Heinz Field.
The soccer team is young, but athletic. The younger players, who have been brought up in the island’s Recreation leagues and middle school teams, are proving to be a nice complement to the older kids and aren’t backing down from the more physical style of play that one finds at the high school level.
Across the island in the school gymnasium, the girls volleyball team has a similar tale. A young, inexperienced team is slowly coming together as they seem to do every year. A great overtime win at Tiverton on a day when an ark would have been the preferred transportation brought high praise from the Tiverton Athletic Director. “Your kids were great,” he effused after the game, as the bus raced to make the 7 p.m. ferry by mere minutes.
This past weekend saw a heartbreaking 5-set loss to Juanita Sanchez at home, with each of the last four sets decided by 2 points in a barn-burner of a match-up.
The boys soccer team plays Rogers at home Friday afternoon, September 23, at 4 p.m., and then there is another double header Saturday of volleyball against Central Falls at 12:30 p.m. at the school, and soccer at Heinz Field against Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy at 12:45 p.m.
