09/18/10 - Deepwater Wind’s Block Island liaison Bryan Wilson reports this week that the company is forging ahead with data collection despite the ongoing court challenges of the wind farm.

In the lead-up to Hurricane Earl, the company took down its meteorological tower near the Coast Guard Station and then re-erected it this week. Also, a new Sea ZephIR LIDAR will be put in place, first on land, then offshore. According to Wilson, this instrument projects a cone of vertical radar that can measure wind in three dimensions.

Deepwater head of development Paul Rich will meet with the island’s Electric Utility Task Group this Friday. According to Wilson he will be accompanied by representatives from Raytheon who are interested in using the Block Island project to experiment with state-of-the-art large-scale battery storage for the Department of Defense.
