Duck season opens on Block Island
The R.I. Department of Environmental Management has announced the start of duck hunting season.
The season opens on Columbus Day weekend, Friday, Oct. 11 through Oct. 14, and also open on the weekends of Nov. 27 to Dec. 1, 2019, and then open again on Dec. 7, 2019 through Jan. 26, 2020.
According to the DEM, the daily bag limit is six ducks, which “shall include no more than two mallards, three wood ducks, two redheads, two black ducks, one pintail, two canvasbacks and two scaup.”
The dates for duck hunting are also for coots and sea ducks.
The following rules and regulations are in place:
• Shooting hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise to sunset, unless otherwise noted in the regulations (see dem.ri.gov for more details).
• Discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of an occupied dwelling is prohibited
• The possession of shells loaded with any shot other than non-toxic shot by any person hunting waterfowl, rails or snipe is prohibited
• No person shall give, put or leave any migratory game birds at any place or in the custody of another person unless the birds are tagged by the hunter.
