A message from Rescue Captain Tracy Fredericks and Fire Department Chief Kirk Littlefield:
We would like to commend the efforts of our volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel, the men and women of Disaster Management Assistance Team, the Block Island Medical Center staff, and the vacationing mainland physicians who stopped to lend their assistance during the tragic motor vehicle accident that occurred on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2020.
We are a tight-knit group who have worked side by side together for so long and when you add in outside forces (new island doctor, DMAT personnel, and total strangers) to an already stressful situation, the results are often chaotic and confusing. That was not the case on Sunday. It was like a coming together of strangers who had one goal: to focus on and carry out their duties in the most compassionate and professional manner that our community has come to expect and rely on in times of crisis.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Jake Panus, to all of the teenagers that were involved in and witnessed the accident, and to their family members, during this difficult time.
Please stay safe.
