Getting on and off in one day
Interstate Navigation Company, based on feedback from Block Island residents who participated in a commuter card-holder survey, has added more boats to their Wednesday schedule starting Jan. 8. That means, in the coldest and quietest months of the year, island residents will have more opportunities to get on and off the island on the same day. There will be three days with three boats going each way on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. (On Saturdays, there are three boats leaving the island, with two from Pt. Judith, starting Jan. 6.) Interstate will be keeping this schedule in place all the way through until December 2020. This is the rare survey that is actually put into action. Kudos to Interstate.
In December 2020, Interstate said that it will evaluate ridership of the new trips, and will apparently adjust its schedule accordingly.
This is a bit of good news. There have been rumblings about the one-boat-each-day schedule, so this is an opportunity for anyone here year-round to take advantage of these additions.
Let’s hope the numbers prove that the added trips were necessary.
