Gillian Moss, 83
Gillian Moss died on April 8, two days after her 83rd birthday, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. She is survived by her husband Kenneth; daughter Elizabeth of Block Island and New York City; son Kyle, his wife Lisa and their three children of Santa Monica, Calif.; and brother Keith MacBain.
Gillian was a graduate of Vassar College. She retired in 2002 as Curator of Textiles at Cooper Hewitt, the Smithsonian Institution’s museum of design in New York City. She was responsible for several groundbreaking exhibits, including “Printed Fabrics. Lace, and Embroidered Samplers.” She wrote many essays and articles for professionals and laypersons, and co-authored a book on William Morris with the Keeper of Textiles at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
Gillian was an active member of the Block Island community, which included teaching ESL to summer workers, a term as president of the Block Island Gardeners, and active participant in many Friends of the Library functions.
The family expresses appreciation for the warm friendships developed on the island. A remembrance celebration will be announced for a date in the summer. Contributions may be sent in the name of Gillian to Friends of the Island Free Library or the B.I. Medical Center.
