Girls volleyball on a streak
The Block Island girls are back at it again, and are poised to make the playoffs in their Division in their first year of competition.
The team had an away victory against Mt. Pleasant, which saw some amazing play from Moira O’Neill (seven kills 16 assists, seven aces), Charlotte Hall (six kills, 11 aces, one block), Mikhaela Brown-Padien (five kills, one ace, and nine digs), and Savannah Brown, the team’s libero, with a, ahem, routine 13 digs.
The final score of the match was three games to one. The games went long, and they had to hold the last ferry for the team. That win allowed the team to a possible seed in the league playoffs in Division three.
There was a home game that was exhilarating against Narragansett on Friday, Oct. 26. ‘Gansett is the leading team in Division 3 right now, one of the top seeds with a record of 12-2 — and we almost beat them. We lost 3-2 in a split with a final game to 15 points. In that game, Sophie Mott led with nine kills, none digs, Charlotte Hall with six kills, three aces, three digs and one block, Moira O’Neill had six kills, six aces, 10 digs, 16 assists and one block, Mikhaela had four kills, three aces, six digs, and two blocks.
The Hurricanes have an overall record of 7-8. Here’s how it stands: Providence Country Day beat Middletown on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Middletown will now play both PCD and Mt Hope. If they win both, they will tie our record. The girls have to beat St. Raphael’s on Saturday, Nov. 3 here at home. If we lose to St. Ray’s, The Hurricanes will have to play Middletown on Tuesday, Nov. 6, which is also a home game.
