A grand re-opening
To the Editor,
Last week we took house guests of ours to the Southeast Lighthouse for a visit. It proved to be an immensely satisfying experience. We opted for the ticket that included a walk through the carefully restored second floor rooms of the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a visit to the first floor interpretive exhibition that provides a compact history of the lighthouse from its construction in 1874 to its removal from the edge of the bluff in 1993, and a guided tour up the tower’s restored spiral staircase to the base of the original light itself and the railed platform that circles it. The view is spectacular.
My hat is off to the Southeast Lighthouse Foundation and in particular to board Chair Dr. Gerald Abbott and Executive Director Lisa Nolan and all who worked with them for this notable achievement in historical interpretation and historic preservation. The Block Island community has been enriched by their efforts and all those who visit the Southeast Lighthouse Museum will find their views of the island and its past enlivened and enlarged.
