Henry Peterson, 75
Henry A. Peterson, Jr., 75, of Block Island and Sanibel Island, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 2, 2021.
Born February 27, 1946, Henry was the loving husband of 56 years to Sandra Depointe Peterson and the son of the late Florence Fredericksen Peterson and Henry A. Peterson, Sr.
Henry had a great love of boating and first came to the island in the 1960s with his father on fishing trips. He later summered with his family aboard the Afta Ours III at Payne’s Dock, moving to the island full-time in 1988 with his wife Sandy, after their purchase of The Harbourview Guest House on Corn Neck Road.
For years, Henry was best known to the island community as the hard-working salesman for Sysco and later in his “retirement,” he was the proud owner of Block Island Taxi and Tours. He grew up in North Attleboro, MA, attended Johnson & Wales College, and started his professional career, partnering with Sandy, as the owners of The New Plainsman restaurant.
Henry loved his wife and family deeply, had a great sense of humor, could talk to anyone, and in recent years was passionate about building wooden boats by hand. He also devoted much of his time to numerous charities including the Sanibel Annual Thanksgiving Community Food Drive.
Besides his wife, Sandy, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Henry and Kristen Peterson of North Attleboro, MA; his daughter Kristina Peterson and her husband, Stuart Shillaber of Block Island; and his three grandsons, Ryan, Eric, and Chad Peterson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please consider a donation in Henry’s name to the Block Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad.
