Last Friday, Dec. 1, the Boys Varsity Basketball team had their season opener at home against Barrington Christian Academy.

The varsity squad is a small one this year, made up of three freshmen, three sophomores, and one junior. The starting lineup was as follows: Point Guard Daniel Cullen, shooting guard Mathias Heinz, small forward Cole McGinnes, power forward Noah McCabe, and center Nick Phillips.

With the guidance of first-year varsity coach Paul Hemingway, the Hurricanes walked out of the locker room and into a hot start, quickly gaining a small lead. The Hurricanes sustained this lead into halftime, never letting BCA get momentum. BCA came out of halftime hot, cutting into the Hurricanes lead.

However, the Hurricanes bounced back to maintain the lead with a series of defensive stops and transition baskets giving them a double-digit lead going into the last few minutes. The ‘Canes fended off a late BCA push and finished the game 51-44 earning them their first win of the new season.

The next Hurricanes home game will be on Monday, Dec. 11 at 12:30 p.m. against Middlebridge.
