The Hurricanes Varsity Volleyball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday with a victory over Westerly.
Seniors Chloe Weber, Samantha Hester, Amira Wilson, and Rory Crawford played their last home volleyball game for Block Island School, and put on quite a show for the loud crowd.
Despite a rough boat ride, the Westerly squad came out strong, taking the first game 25-20. But the Hurricanes battled back in the second game, jumping out to a 3-0 lead behind strong serving by Weber, including an ace. Westerly called timeout with the ‘Canes up 8-3 following
the second ace by Chloe Weber.
The Hurricanes continued their strong service game, with Campbell Caviello and Wilson serving up aces of their own while Block Island built a 17-11 lead. At this point, Cally Weber was back up in the rotation, and held the serve until the Hurricanes had doubled up the Bulldogs
at 22-11 behind thundering spikes from Wilson and Chloe Weber. Westerly finally took the serve back, but a spike from Chloe Weber broke the Bulldogs’ serve and their spirits. Chloe Weber served out the game and hammered home the winning spike, Hurricanes 25, Bulldogs 12.
In game three, Block Island took an early lead with Wilson spiking two winners in a row. Chloe Weber’s ace put the Hurricanes up 4-1. But both teams struggled with the serve throughout the game, with several dropped points on both sides due to missed serves. As such, it was hard to get a rally going, but the Hurricanes fought hard and protected their fragile lead. When Westerly missed yet another serve, to make it 17-12, the Bulldogs coach called timeout. Cora Ryan served up two aces after the timeout, and after trading points back and forth, Haley Conant ended the game with a spike, 25-19.
Westerly continued to struggle with the serve in the fourth game, but the Hurricanes shook off their own service errors with Chloe Weber and Coviello both dealing aces early on. Bailey Payne’s spike put the Hurricanes up 7-4, and they slowly built out the lead. Weber was back up to serve at 16-12, and held serve until the Hurricanes were winning 22-12, their largest margin of the game. Westerly got it together for a moment, and fought back to 22-16, at which point Hurricane Coach Rob Martin called a timeout. Westerly missed the serve coming out of the timeout, and Coviello served out the game with an ace to end the match 25-16.
On Monday, the Hurricanes traveled to Tolman High School for the regular season finale. The Block Island squad emerged victorious, winning 25-22, 25-10, and 25-22. The season record for the Hurricanes is 11-7, earning the team the fifth spot in the standings.
