International Student Center
To the Editor,
We had a wonderful season at the International Student Center at Harbor Church! Free, weekly dinners were served to an average of 50 to 60 student workers. Our Recreation Center was open three nights a week to serve as a ‘home away from home’ where student workers could relax, unwind, play games and watch movies. We had an amazing end-of-the season party complete with games from bean toss to Bingo, with prizes for the
winners donated by local businesses.
The countries of origin for our summer workers include: Argentina, South Africa, Brazil, Jordan, Romania, Turkey, Dominican Republic, Spain, Jamaica, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Honduras, Canada, Ethiopia, Serbia,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Taiwan, Haiti, and the U.S. of A.!
Many thanks to all who worked to make this ministry possible: The Harbor Church team: Pastor Peter and Carrie Johnson, Cindy Pappas, Alton Bentley, Susan Matheke, and Martha Ball.
Sincere and special thanks to local businesses and individuals who provided meals, goods, and gifts.
Meals were provided by: The Beachead, Ballard’s, Aldo’s, Champlin’s, Harborside, Spring House, The 1661, Lisa Sprague, Penny and Will Young, and Pat Podkowsky.
Gifts were received from: Block Island Residents’ Association, Block Island Grocery, Kai Kai, Mar Mar’s, B.I. Chamber of Commerce, Persephone’s Kitchen, Royal Jewelers, Star Department Store, The Ice Cream Place, Trish and David Foley, Tony and Cindy Pappas, and The Roosa Fund.
As the season winds down, and these student workers return to their homes overseas, who knows what positive ripples will be created around the world by the splash of goodwill and generosity shown by our Block Island Community?
Thanks again, Block Island, for your partnership in this worthwhile endeavor!
Pastor Peter Preiser
