An invitation to remember Lee Cushman

Tue, 08/07/2012 - 12:06pm

Lee Cushman died surrounded by her family and friends on March 13, 2012, at age 73, after a brief illness.

We three children survive her: Bert, Brad and Jessica, along with our spouses Cindy, Seena and Paul, respectively. She is also survived by her dear friend Peter Wood and her beloved dogs, dubbed The Blondes by the locals who often saw them roam the island.

Please come raise a glass with us on Saturday, August 11, to celebrate her life. We will do this at the home of Peter Wood on Old Mill Road from 1 p.m. on. We expect our gathering to be full of the wonderful stories and laughs that Lee brought into our lives. Do bring one of yours to put in our memory book. Drinks and light appetizers will be served.

While our mother resided in Darien, Conn., her heart was always on Block Island, a place we have been coming to summer after summer since 1965. She grew up in Milford, Conn., and while attending Smith College she met and later married Robert Cushman and began our family. With a tremendous zest for life and any new experience, she led us on great adventures that included living in Switzerland, Belgium, Hong Kong, San Francisco and Brazil. There were many wild trips in between as well, deep in the jungles of India, the back sides of Mont Blanc, on safari in Africa on the backs of elephants, in rusty trucks and on hand-me-down skies.

Lee was always one to take life by the collar and shake it until every last drop of fun rattled out to delight and educate us all, a wonderful mother who always encouraged us to throw caution to the wind and drink deeply of this life.
