Island Bound hosts poets Coleman Barks and Lisa Starr

Susan Bush and Island Bound Bookstore are pleased to announce an afternoon of poetry on Sunday, July 23, with poets Coleman Barks and Lisa Starr.

Barks is the world-renowned translator of the 13th-century Persian poet/mystic, Jellaludin Rumi. He has published more than 30 volumes of translations, making Rumi the best selling, most popular poet in the world. The translations have made their way into feature films, posters and bumper stickers, and Barks is featured on the new Coldplay album, “Headful of Dreams,” reading his poem “The Guest House.” Rumi is even more of a household name since Beyoncé and Jay Z bestowed the name on one of their twins just last week.

Lisa Starr lived on Block Island for 30 years, where she ran the Hygeia House, founded the Block Island Poetry Project, and wrote her first three collections of poems. She is a two-time recipient of the Rhode Island Fellowship in Poetry. From 2007 to 2013 she served as Poet Laureate of Rhode Island.

Barks and Starr have been taking their poetry on the road together for more than 10 years. They have performed at hundreds of schools, theaters, conferences and festivals, and have traveled as far as Alaska, England, and Norway to share their work. In May, they traveled to California where they entertained the actress Demi Moore (for whom Starr was commissioned to write a poem) and shared the stage with Coldplay’s Chris Martin at a private fundraiser at his Malibu home.

Both are looking forward to sharing new work and old favorites with their island friends. The reading starts at 4 p.m. at Harbor Church with a signing and reception immediately following at Island Bound.
