It’s your money

It is no longer news to say that each year’s municipal budget sets a new record in terms of its amount. It seems as though, like death and taxes, the fact that it will cost more to run a town in the coming year than it did in the previous one has proved to be axiomatic.

The next question, then, is whether those funds are being spent wisely. Now is the time to find out. Next Wednesday, March 7, the 2018/2019 municipal budget will be presented to the Town Council and the residents of New Shoreham. It will be somewhere above $15 million, which certainly doesn’t put Block Island into the realm of dizzying costs it takes to run much larger cities, but it is enough to make one realize that the Island isn’t the old-fashioned community it was just a few decades ago.

It’s that time of year when the daffodils have once again started to come up too early, and we’ve come out of a month that has been dull and wet. March may seem like the perfect time to take in a final month of peace before the real work of preparing for next summer begins.

But March is also, alas, when budget hearings will be held — the schedule is printed right below this editorial — and this is the time to make your opinions heard. Many people have worked long hours to prepare it, and it is certainly worth an hour or two of your time to take a look to see how your money is being spent.
