Let’s Talk with BIMI and TNC

The following was sent in by the Block Island Maritime Institute:

The Nature Conservancy and Block Island Maritime Institute have again teamed up to present a series of lectures this fall. The speakers in the “Let’s Talk” series will be presenting information on topics relevant to Block Island.

Block Island has, and continues to host, many research opportunities for students and professional scientists, but rarely does the community get a chance to learn about the “whys and wherefores”, and results of the research. In addition, the island is often the venue for experimentation, such as the upcoming winter project to test the viability of growing sugar kelp in the Great Salt Pond. Such trial projects also present the community’s need for information.  The Let’s Talk series will be a great occasion to learn about ongoing research and new efforts on Block Island. The Let’s Talk series will provide lots of opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion about the various topics.

Here is the Let’s Talk schedule:

Saturday, Sept. 22 — Dr. Bruce Corliss, Dean of the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography, will speak about the GSO and its programs, many of which may provide opportunities for local students, and future Block Island research. Dr. Corliss will also speak about green boating, another topic relative to the island’s environment. 4 p.m., at the Island Free Library.

Saturday, Oct. 6 – Dr. Lindsay Green, University of Rhode Island professor, will be speaking about kelp aquaculture. 4 p.m., location TBD.

Wednesday, Oct. 10 – Diandra Verbeyst, TNC’s Great Salt Pond Scientist, will talk on the life in the Great Salt Pond. 4 p.m., at the TNC porch on High Street.
