LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Great Salt Pond Swim – 7

Sat, 08/13/2022 - 12:00pm

To the Editor:
On Saturday, July 30, our seventh annual pond swim took place at Andy’s Way, The Great Salt Pond Swim – 7. 110 swimmers took part in the event, ranging in age from 13 to 82 (age correction from our article). It was a beautiful, sunny day this year with a light breeze blowing in from the east.
The safety of our swimmers is our primary concern. Without the Block Island Club, George Davis, Bob Greenlee, and Rob Closter in their boats, and Mary Egan in her kayak keeping an eye on the swimmers, this event would not be possible. In addition to our waterfront patrols, this event would not even exist without the incredible generosity of our sponsors, swimmers, and volunteers. Their support makes it possible to protect the Great Salt Pond, by keeping it clean, healthy, and protecting the sea life in the Pond.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: Valenti Motors; The Block Island Sports Shop (who supplied our great swim caps); Aldo’s Italian Restaurant (supplying the delicious pizza); Lathrop Insurance; and The Block Island Club. A very special thanks goes out to our major sponsor for this event, Sullivan Sotheby’s International Realty, a company that makes this event a reality! Our volunteers: The Block Island Club, Christine Conklin, Raj Conklin, Rory Conklin, George Davis, Dave Foley, Bob Greenlee, Ed Hayde, Bruce Johnson, Barbara MacMullan, Erin Mistele (our fantastic photographer), Webb Moore, Trudy O’Toole, Cindy Pappas, Betsy Pyne, Mitch Silberbush, Sven Risom, Priscilla Shepherd, Lonni Todd, and Jan Wruck. A simple thank you is not enough!
Special thanks to Kate McConville, the Harbors Department, the Highway Department, the Block Island Police Department, the Block Island Rescue Squad, Harbor Church, Mike Shea, and Rob Brown for helping us out with this event.
And of course, a huge thank you to our swimmers, all 110 of you, and we hope to see all of you again with some of your friends and relatives next year, on July 29, 2023 for the Great Salt Pond Swim – 8. What better way to experience the Pond, than to swim in it!
