To: the Editor —
We are sorry to confirm the rumors that have been swirling around that Goose & Garden will not be open for the 2012 season. John Whitaker is off pursuing other adventures, and we are taking this year to regroup and reorganize. We plan to reopen in the Spring of 2013. We appreciate the loyal support of our customers over the years and look forward to bigger and better things in 2013.

Kudos to two wonderful Block Island School teachers, Debbie Hart and Barby Michel, and the entire student body for their recent efforts to help terminally ill children. Collecting coins and rolling them in order to provide less fortunate children an opportunity to have fun while enduring serious illness is so honorable. We should be so proud of these two teachers teaching wonderful life lessons to our children and “way to go” to the students.

I would like to add our expression of deep appreciation to the Block Island Fire Department, expressed in a letter to the Times last week by our friends and neighbors, Sven and Laura Risom. As the one who caused the grass fire, which came uncomfortably close to their home, I am especially indebted to the department for its rapid response and cool efficiency in quelling the blaze, for which I apologize to all concerned. Its men arrived only minutes after I called.
We also echo Sven and Laura’s urge to one and all to donate generously to the fire department and the rescue squad. You can be sure we will be doing just that. Thanks to all.
