Write the Council, ban the bag

To the Editor:

On Wednesday Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. the New Shoreham Town Council will continue its public hearing on the banning of single-use plastic bags on Block Island.

Plastic bags are bad for our environment, dangerous to marine life, and litter our trails and beaches. Banning plastic bags is not a radical change. Entire states, countries, and islands have banned plastic bags.

Nantucket, an island very similar to Block Island, passed this same ban over 25 years ago. Nantucket is 47.8 square miles and about 30 miles from the coast of Cape Cod. It is not comparable to our seven by three island only 13 miles from the Port of Galilee. If an island of that size and distance can ban single use plastic bags, so can we!

Should the Town of New Shoreham ban single-use plastic bags we will be the fifth town in the state of Rhode Island to do so. If you feel strongly about this subject, we encourage you to email a letter to the Town Council of New Shoreham at townclerk@new-shoreham.com.
