A special community

To the Editor:

On behalf of the family of Robbie Murphy and the Fundraising Committee of the Block Island Lions Club: Thank you, Block Island! You have once again demonstrated what a special community this is.

The list of those who donated items and services for the silent and live auctions, which ran well over 100, are too many to itemize here, but you know you are, and thank you. To the bidders who ran the bids far over their stated value, your generosity was extraordinary. The turnout was heart-warming.

Special thanks to the staff of the Chamber of Commerce, many of whom are Lions Club members, who worked long hours collecting, categorizing and storing the donations and notifying the winners. To the owners and staff of The Yellow Kittens, a perfect venue for the event and for donating an endless supply of food, thank you!

And how about our live auctioneer Rob “Magic” Martin, who spent endless hours reviewing Youtube of professional auctioneer videos before taking center stage! What a performance! Thank you, Mark Vaillancourt for handcrafting two picnic tables, whose raffles netted many thousands of dollars.

Robbie is currently undergoing treatments, will have surgery and then begin his recovery. Your generosity will help the family meet their obligations until Robbie can return to keeping island autos finetuned and safe for the road.

As donations continue to pour in we have no final number. Suffice to say it will mean many thousands of dollars for this well-loved family.

Our hats are off to the island community! Thanks again.

Dear Kay

To the Editor:

The felicitous photo accompanying Kate Bailey’s obituary (Block Island Times, 6/30/18), bears witness to her gracious and heartwarming smile and countenance, her charm and joie de vivre, ever on display on stage when memorably performing in the island summer extravaganzas, as well as off-stage when encountering her at random in and about the island.

Dear Kay, ‘twas ever a pleasure.
