Local man to run NYC marathon for charity
Lyle Carey is on two missions.
His primary mission is his service in the United States Marine Corps, in which he enlisted in 2016. Carey is with the First Battallion, 8th Marine Weapons Company and is on his second deployment, currently stationed in Norway. Carey is a 2010 graduate of the Block Island School, and also a graduate of the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport in 2016.
His second mission this year is to run in the New York City Marathon to raise $4,000 for the New York City Police and Fire Widows and Children’s Benefit Fund, which Carey said “helps support the families of first responders that have died in the line of duty.” This is his first marathon.
Carey said he “found out about the charity from a fellow Marine that I will be running the race with.” Carey said that a marine gets “special leave when we get back from a deployment, so I’m using that to run the marathon.
He said, “If people are interested in helping my fundraiser, the donation page is on my Facebook page (and it will be posted on my father’s (Bill Carey of Block Island) Facebook page.” Carey said that “donations go directly to the families connected to the non-profit I mentioned above.”
