Mary Margaret Babcock, 81, a resident of Connecticut and Block Island, passed away on, Jan. 14, 2020 with her loving family by her side. Born on April 18, she was the daughter of Dr. Harold T. Gilmour and Sara A. (Straw) Gilmour and the loving wife of Robert W. Babcock, Sr. for 60 years. Mary was a proud graduate of the WW Backus Hospital School of Nursing, where she was an active alumni officer.

She was active in Boy Scouts of America, and a member of Christ Church in Norwich. She was a kind and generous person who was devoted to her children and grandchildren and shared her love with friends, neighbors, and all those who entered her home. She enjoyed summers on Block Island, yearly trips to Florida, gardening, and keeping her husband in line. Mary graciously shared their island home with family and friends and no one ever went home hungry.

Mary was predeceased by her parents and her son, Craig William Babcock. She is survived by her husband, Robert Babcock, Sr., and their beloved dog Hailey; her children Robert Babcock Jr. and partner Terri James, Bruce and wife Pamela Babcock, and her daughter-in-law Pam Babcock of Lisbon, Conn. and Block Island; daughter Melissa Babcock Loizou; her cherished grandchildren Ashley (Tim), Megan (Justin), Amy (Terriell), Craig (Britta), Cassie (Jeffery), and Sara (Christopher); and three great-grandchildren: Thalia, Maggie, and Silas. She is also survived by her brother William Gilmour and his wife, Marlene.

Mary will be missed terribly by all her family and friends. You can look to the sunset or the stars for a glimpse of her loving spirit. Contributions in Mary's memory can be made to the Block Island Volunteer Fire Department.
