Middle school soccer kicks off on mainland

The Middle School soccer team surprised the West Bay Christian Academy Eagles with a 4 to 2 win on a gorgeous fall day, Wednesday, Oct. 6. It was the first away game for the Hurricanes and they proved up to the task, leading the entire game with goalie Barrett Evans making several great saves.

Coached by veteran Tracy Heinz, all the players on a deep roster got to play putting the skills and positioning learned in practice into play. Due to Covid, it was their first game in two years and parents for both schools turned out in great numbers to cheer the teams on. The Hurricanes scoring came from Abigail Willi, Nathan Aragao, Thomas Kivlehan and relentless, never-back-down pressure from Justin Berry that led to a score by Chase Hatfield. Team defense was cemented by Jillian Licari and Kiley Ryan, who shut down many of the Eagle’s advances before they could gain momentum over midfield, continually clearing the ball from in front of the goal.
The Hurricanes were a bit winded at the end, as they are still working on building their game-legs into shape for the long contests. The ferry proved surprisingly quiet as several sacked out on the boat’s benches on the ride home, content to rest and relish the win.
