National Grid granted June 30 extension
The New Shoreham Town Council has granted National Grid a June 30 deadline for demobilizing and removing its cable installation operation at the Fred Benson Town Beach. The agreement calls for the town to be paid $9,920 per day for each day of additional work. National Grid's original deadline was May 15, with seven floating days until June 21.
The Town Council approved National Grid's extension request at its Wednesday, June 15 meeting with a 5-0 vote. The extension is contingent upon National Grid sending a letter to the town stating that the utility will not oppose the town's formation of a co-op if the town purchases the Block Island Power Company.
Town Manager Nancy Dodge said that the deadline extension is due to equipment and weather delays.
