This past April, Coast opened on 448 Ocean Avenue. Owned by Cariona Davis, Coast is a new eco-friendly, woman-owned and locally supportive shop.
Coast offers locally fresh-cut flowers, mostly from Davis’s backyard on Spring Street, along with flowers from Ayla Shade, a local florist and owner of Harvest Moon Florals, that are also Spring Street grown. The rest of the selection of flowers and plants is either from Little State Flower in Portsmouth, R.I. or The Floral Reserve in Providence. This weekend’s Spring Street harvested flower and plant selections include Chinese roses, irises, gaura, African marigolds, calendula, mammoth dill, sweet peas, Chinese forget-menots, Shirley poppies, cosmos “purity,” and blue cornflowers.
Davis accepts requests for custom bouquets and table arrangements. Starting this week through September 9, summer flower subscriptions are also available.
Davis has spent 20 summers on Block Island, along with several winters. Last year Davis and her husband Omorow bought DVL Landscaping, which includes landscape, construction, and fine gardening services.
“My inspiration for the shop was my husband’s country, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. There is so much that grows naturally,” Davis said. “My main goal is to source many items from SVG’s improvised neighborhoods and support local people, while providing the people of Block Island with quality and unique products.”
The shop also carries essential oils, lotions, vases, beach hats, clothes, reusable bags, seed containers, Turkish towels, solar lanterns, and more. Davis carries locally made items as well, selling photos from Robin B. Langsdorf Photography, plus artwork and jewelry.
“Everything that I source here is either woman-owned or women-supported,” Davis said.
Davis plans to open weekends in the fall with pumpkins, mums, wreaths, garlic, and more. To get more information visit www.coastblockisland.com or @coast_blockisland on Instagram. To request bouquets, table arrangements, or start a summer subscription, call or text (203) 654-5637.
“The shop has evolved as the weeks have gone on, with the partnership with Omorow’s landscaping company, DVL, offering cut flowers, annual plant sales, larger plant deliveries, and items for the garden, beach and backyard, it has all become a part of the inventory,” Davis said.
Coast is open Mondays 9 to 1 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 1 to 3 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays 9 to 3 p.m., and it’s closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hours may vary throughout the summer and the store will be open through Thanksgiving.
