To the Editor,
I was puzzled after reading “Town passes on RIPTA proposal” - I thought maybe this was an early April Fools’ joke. It should be a shared goal on Block Island to reduce cars and mopeds from the roadways. First of all, our summer congestion problems often lead to traffic accidents, some unfortunately with fatalities. Second, public transportation offers us the opportunity to minimize emissions from all of the vehicles traveling on the roadways. In addition to lessening our harmful impact on the environment, this also brings an added benefit of cleaner, healthier air on our island. The third point in support of public transportation should be affordability.
I wasn’t at the meeting, however the reporting seems to indicate that the Town Council isn’t interested in the idea of public transportation on the island. From my point of view, it seems that public transportation could help to create a more sustainable, healthier, and affordable place to live.
What’s not to like about that?
