This is a no-no

This does not make New Shoreham Highways Supervisor Mike Shea happy. Furniture left on the side of the road, often under the guise that it is free, and sometimes left because the owners don’t want to bother taking it to the dump, is a no-no. This couch was still on the side of Corn Neck Road on the morning of Thursday, Sept. 12, and had been in the rain all night. It was soggy and mud-splattered. This makes the probability of someone picking it up and bringing it home nil.

This type of thing is a familiar site at the beginning and end of the season. People open up and close their homes realizing they don’t want this piece of furniture or that. Some of it is perfectly good, and is indeed sometimes claimed by someone who could use a chair or table or lamp.

But much of the time its left up to the staff of the Highways Department to haul it off to the town transfer station. They have better things to do with their time, and there is no reason for taxpayers to be subsidizing trips to the dump.

If you have something you think others might need, keep it inside your house and post a notice on social media. If someone wants it, they’ll come and get it. There’s no reason to leave it on the side of the road.
